    Adobe Digital Editions 1.0
    Friday, June 22, 2007
Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the release of Adobe® Digital Editions 1.0, a new software application built from the ground up for acquiring, managing and reading eBooks, digital newspapers, and other digital publications. Available as a free download for Microsoft® Windows® and Macintosh systems, Adobe Digital Editions software transforms the digital reading experience and offers new creative possibilities for publishers.

Leading publishers, online retailers and channel partners have announced their support for Adobe Digital Editions today (see separate quote sheet ). By using a new export feature built into Adobe InDesign® CS3, publishers can easily create new Adobe Digital Editions-ready content, helping to significantly reduce cost and conversion time. In addition, with versions for mobile platforms and reading devices also planned, Sony has committed to embed Adobe Digital Editions technology into its portable reader product line.

“Adobe Digital Editions will revolutionize how publishers deliver eBooks and other digital content and how consumers experience it,” said Rob Tarkoff, senior vice president, Corporate Development at Adobe. “The combination of Adobe Digital Editions, InDesign CS3 and a new generation of hardware from innovators like Sony shows that digital publishing is front and center for content owners -- and millions of readers who are looking forward to innovations in the delivery of their favorite works.”

“We’re excited to work with Adobe to pioneer new applications for eBooks and other digital documents,” said Ron Hawkins, vice president of portable reader systems marketing at Sony Electronics, Inc. “This collaboration will give us the opportunity to expand our offerings to a larger audience and new markets, allowing individual consumers, businesses, and other customers to take advantage of the portability and ease of use of Sony’s Reader products with a wider spectrum of content.”

With native support for Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and XML-based publications, Adobe Digital Editions already works seamlessly with more than 150,000 commercially published titles. Using Adobe Digital Editions 1.0 readers will find that content automatically re-flows, adapting to different screen sizes and support for Adobe Flash® software promises to enhance digital publications through the integration of rich audio and video.

Adobe Digital Editions 1.0 Features and Enhancements

The public beta of Adobe Digital Editions generated more than 300,000 downloads in less than six months and user feedback influenced the feature set. Adobe Digital Editions now enables users to annotate content through bookmarks, highlights and text notes. The library view offers advanced organization with multiple bookshelves. A slick new user interface enhances zooming and the overall reading experience, while support for the new IDPF Open Publication Standard (OPS) for XHTML-based re-flowable eBooks, guarantees a seamless viewing experience.

The Adobe Digital Editions 1.0 download is less than 3MB and leverages Adobe Flash Player technology to enable quick installation as part of the content download. The integration with Adobe Acrobat® 8 and Adobe Reader® 8 applications allows users to install and launch Adobe Digital Editions automatically within these industry standard products.

    Optional Content Protection

Adobe Digital Editions works in conjunction with Adobe Digital Editions Protection Technology (ADEPT), a new, hosted content protection service to guard publisher’s rights while maintaining superior ease-of-use for consumers. ADEPT supports the company’s proven Adobe® Content Server (ACS) technology and protects both PDF and reflow-centric OPS XML eBooks. Purchase and lending business models include library lending, subscription, and ad-supported models. Details can be viewed at www.adobe.com/go/digitalpublishing .

Adobe Digital Editions 1.0 will be unveiled at the O’Reilly Tools of Change Conference in San Jose on June 19.

Layers as The Backbone Of Photoshop
    Monday, June 11, 2007
Adobe Photoshop is not cheap. There are certainly more affordable photo editing software applications available on the Internet but there are reasons why Photoshop is so popular among professional web designers, photographers, and graphic design specialists, etc. The ability of Photoshop to allow you to work in layers makes otherwise complex designs easy.

If you are learning how to use Adobe Fotoshop to do your graphic designs than make sure you pay special attention to the section on how to use layers. To illustrate how layers work imagine you have a piece of paper. This piece of paper is your background. You could leave the background white or paint it any color you wish. Now, let’s assume you want to add a photograph of a sunset. Your photograph of the sunset is on a transparent paper and you lay it over the top of your background. The sunset image is on your first layer. Now, let’s assume you want to add some text. Your text is on another sheet of transparent paper and you lay it over the top. This is your second layer. You can add as many layers as you wish. You can also change the order of the layers. For example, if you decide you want the text layer to be behind the sunset layer you can move the layers easily with a few clicks of the mouse.

This is essentially the same way you create graphics and complex images in AdobePhotoshop. Adventage of layers is that if you decide for instance that you don’t want a sunset and you would rather have an image of a beach you can simply delete the sunset layer and add an a new layer for the beach image without disturbing the background or the text layer.

Working in Photoshop with layers allows you to experiment without fear of damaging your original image. Layers also allow the user to make changes without disrupting other elements of the image.

Photoshop Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse
    Friday, June 01, 2007
Software Add-On Delivers Direct Access to Google’s Free 3D Content

SAN JOSE, Calif. — May 31, 2007 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) today announced the Photoshop® CS3 Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse, enabling Adobe® Photoshop CS3 Extended users to take further advantage of the software’s powerful compositing, painting and image-editing toolset for editing 3D content. With the plug-in, users will be able to query and download free 3D content from the Google 3D Warehouse, Google’s free online repository for 3D models and content, directly within Photoshop CS3 Extended. 3D Content then can be placed, manipulated and used in composites with the new 3D tools in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

The plug-in is available for free download from the Adobe Labs Web site at http://labs.adobe.com .

“We were happy to collaborate with Adobe on the Photoshop Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse. With this plug-in, users of Photoshop CS3 Extended can participate in the 3D Warehouse community, giving them the ability to search, store and share thousands of 3D models and content,” said Mark Limber, product manager at Google. “The Google 3D Warehouse repository, combined with Photoshop CS3 Extended, allows creatives, architects, manufacturers and others to find exactly what they need to bring their virtual worlds and conceptual designs to life.”

The Google 3D Warehouse is a free Google service which allows anyone to search for and download 3D models and content via a standard Web browser and now, with this plug-in, Photoshop CS3 Extended. Users can also submit their own models to share within the community by uploading them from Google SketchUp into the 3D Warehouse. Models include everything needed for a 3D world, including: buildings, houses, bridges, statues, sculptures, couches, cars, people, pets and more. If the model has a location on earth, such as a building in New York city, you can also download and view it in Google Earth.

Once downloaded, the plug-in opens a dialog box that connects directly to Google’s 3D Warehouse via the Internet. Users can browse and search the 3D Warehouse for content, and download and save selections to their hard drive. Downloaded models will be saved in the COLLADA format. With support for industry standard 3D formats, including COLLADA, Photoshop CS3 Extended opens 3D models as 3D layers. Users can then access the textures applied to model surfaces, enhance them with Photoshop CS3 Extended and its wide range of editing and painting tools, and save or composite them into a 2-D image.

“Our work with Google brings 3D content directly into the Photoshop CS3 Extended experience, enabling more efficient editing and enriching the overall visualization process,” said Kevin Connor, senior director of product management for Digital Imaging Professional Products at Adobe. “Photoshop CS3 Extended was developed to help professionals push the limits of digital imaging and more easily realize their vision in 3D. It’s great to see Google’s early support for Photoshop CS3 Extended and the advancement of 3D design workflows.”

Photoshop Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse Pricing and Availability

Announced in March 2007, Photoshop CS3 Extended software, an entirely new version of Photoshop, helps professionals discover new dimensions in digital imaging, harnessing everything in Photoshop CS3 plus groundbreaking tools for 3D, motion graphics, image measurement and analysis.

The Photoshop CS3 Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse is available for free download from the Adobe Labs Web site at http://labs.adobe.com . The Macintosh plug-in is available today, with the Windows® plug-in due June 1.
