The EXIF format in a nutshell
    Friday, April 27, 2007
You might have heard the acronym EXIF in conjunction with digital cameras. EXIF allows for additional information such as shutter speed, aperture and resolution to be associated with a photo file. EXIF ensures that cameras can document such information while other software can read and use it. Here is how.
EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. EXIF does not define a completely new file format – in other words EXIF does not replace the familiar JPG or TIFF files. Instead EXIF defines a set of tags and semantics that can be added to existing formats such as JPG and TIFF to provide more information about the photo. For example JPG files use application marker segments to include EXIF information while TIFF files use the TIFF tag options. A more accurate description of EXIF would be an extension to current photo file formats that allows the documentation of extended photo information – so for example a JPG file can include EXIF information.
So what kind of information is recorded by the EXIF extension? It really depends on the camera that you are using. Some cameras do not use EXIF at all while most cameras record the basic settings in which a photo was taken such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO value, resolution and more.
We will not go over all the possible information EXIF can store as this is a very long list but we will go over some of the more important commonly used ones:
    # Image width / height in pixels: the number of pixels in the X and Y axis.

    # Orientation: camera position when the photo was taken. For example was the camera in landscape or portrait position?

    # Timestamp: the date and time when the photo was taken

    # Equipment Make / Model: strings that describe the equipment the photo was taken with. The make can be for example “Olympus” and the model can be for example “E-330”.

    # Exposure program: camera exposure program used to take the photo such as automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority, action program and more.

    # Shutter speed / Aperture value / Focal length: shutter speed, aperture value and focal length settings for the photo.

    # Metering mode: the metering mode used when taking the photo for example: center weight average, spot, pattern and more.

    # Flash status: the status of the flash when taking the photo. Includes information such as whether or not the flash was fired, special settings such as red-eye prevention and more.

There are many software programs that allow you to read the EXIF associated with a photo. Exifreader is one of them and there are many more including popular photo processing programs such as Photoshop. Some software programs can also automatically use EXIF information to do some basic image processing. One common such processing is photo rotation. If EXIF camera orientation information is available then software can automatically rotate photos as required.
EXIF is a great tool for learning how to take good photos. When viewing photos alongside with their EXIF information you can see the exact camera settings when taking the photo. This allows you to figure out why good photos look good and why bad photos look bad. You can learn which camera settings like shutter and aperture were right for one scenario and which were right for another and using this information use better settings in your future photos.

    RGB color model
    Tuesday, April 17, 2007
RGB color model or RBG color standard (often spelled RBG in historical engineering literature) is an additive model in which red, green, and blue (often used in additive light models) are combined in various ways to reproduce other colors. The name of the model and the abbreviation ‘RGB’ come from the three primary colors, red, green, and blue and the technological development of CRTs which could display color instead of a monochrome phosphoresence (including grey scaling) such as black and white film and television imaging.

The term RGBA is also used, to mean Red, Green, Blue, Alpha. This is not a different color model, but a representation; the Alpha is used for transparency.

These three colors should not be confused with the primary pigments of red, blue, and yellow, known in the art world as ‘primary colors’, as the latter combine based on reflection and absorbstion of photons whereas RGB depends on emission of photons from a compound excited to a higher energy state by impact with an electron beam.

The RGB color model itself does not define what is meant by ‘red’, ‘green’ and ‘blue’ (specroscopically), and so the results of mixing them are not specified as exact (but relative, and averaged by the human eye).

When the exact spectral make-up of the red, green and blue primaries are defined, the color model would then become what is known in science and engineering as an absolute color space, such as sRGB or Adobe RGB; see RGB color spaces for more details.

This article discusses concepts common to all the different RGB color spaces that use the RGB color model, which are used in one implementation or another historically in color image producing electronics technology.

    Adobe Photoshop vs Adobe Illustrator
    Saturday, April 14, 2007
What are the differences between adobe photoshop and adobe illustrator? Produced by the same company, there are some that say the difference between the two programs is small. In actuality, adobe illustrator takes some key elements of adobe photoshop to the next level and beyond.

Abobe photoshop is a very popular program used by digital photographers around the world. The abundance of

photoshop tips and tutorials make this a very easy program to learn and to use. Photoshop can be used to take any existing image and give it a professional, polished looked. Borders can be added and pictures tweaked to look better than any digital camera could make possible. Almost anything you can imagine doing to a picture is capable when using adobe photoshop.

Abobe illustrator is a different program entirely. Illustrator is a vector-based drawing program that allows you to create your own unique graphics. Adobe illustrator graphics can be used in print, online, in video, and even on your cell phone. Want to create your own background for your cell phone? It’s possible when you have adobe illustrator, and something that can’t be done with photoshop alone.

Both programs are vastly talked about on the web. You will find a huge array of photoshop tutorials and illustrator tutorials, illustrator and photoshop tips. Forums, chat rooms, and discussion groups that focus on both programs are also abundant on the web. Once you start looking, you’ll find more and more information on adobe photoshop and adobe illustrator.

While photoshop does have some photoshop drawing and vector art tools, the tools are nothing compared to what is available on adobe illustrator. With a vast array of templates that can help you get started and a number of different drawing tools, you can create your own unique graphics and artwork using adobe illustrator. You can create unique graphics with photoshop, but you must start with a base image and your tools are limited in comparison to adobe illustrator. For the serious graphic designer, adobe illustrator is the best program to use. However, if your drawing needs are small, photoshop will probably work just as well.

Photoshop tutorials do not extensively cover photoshop drawing, and you’ll have to look for some photoshop drawing specific tutorials to find truly useful information. Photoshop tips pages mention little regarding photoshop drawing and vector art tools. However, to make your digital images look perfect adobe photoshop is the perfect tool for you. Once you learn how to use photoshop to make your images perfect, you won’t be able to stop yourself from “fixing” every digital image that you use.

Adobe illustrator is a different program. Where photoshop helps you create a unique look using existing images, illustrator helps you create your own brand-new images. In graphic design, adobe illustrator may be one of the best and easier tools you can use. The software is user friendly and tutorials to help you use illustrator better are all over the Internet. Whatever you need to learn about adobe illustrator, there’s a tutorial for that.

There’s no reason you cannot work with both adobe photoshop and adobe

illustrator to create brand new images or polish existing ones. The two programs have some basic, shared components, so by mastering one you will already have a working knowledge of using the other. To make your images as stunning as possible or to create graphics that no one else has seen before, you can use both adobe photoshop and illustrator. There is no reason to pick between the two and use only one program if you have uses for both. Because the two programs and their uses are so different, it’s probably preferable to use both adobe programs for your digital photography and image creations.

In their own unique ways, adobe photoshop and adobe illustrator and great additions to your existing software. Each program has vast uses for the digital photographer and graphic designer, and you’ll find that both are equally useful when it comes to creating the best and most sophisticated images. Tutorials, photoshop tips, and adobe illustrator information that you’ll find online make using these programs quick and easy. The more you use these adobe programs, the more you’ll want to use them. Who knows what you’ll create next?

Adobe Preview of Acrobat 3D Version 8
    Friday, April 06, 2007
Adobe Unveils Preview of Acrobat 3D Version 8

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced a public preview of Adobe® Acrobat® 3D Version 8 software, a major upgrade to the desktop application for driving PDF document-based 3D design collaboration and computer-aided design (CAD) data interoperability capabilities to virtually anyone across the extended enterprise. Starting immediately, users worldwide can download a beta version of the product free from Adobe Labs, and experience the new and enhanced capabilities it will deliver for professionals in the manufacturing and architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries. The preview can be downloaded at labs.adobe.com/technologies/acrobat3d_version8/ .

“Acrobat 3D and PDF have gained considerable traction in manufacturing and AEC over the past year as a means for driving 3D-based communication and collaboration processes leveraging a ubiquitous, trusted file format,” said Tom Hale, senior vice president, Knowledge Worker Business Unit at Adobe. “Today, we’re excited to provide users around the world free access to a beta of Acrobat 3D Version 8. We encourage anyone with interest in 3D to experience the dramatic advances we’ve made in terms of file compression, precision and CAD data interoperability. We look forward to hearing the thoughts and first-hand experiences of users throughout the preview period.”

With Acrobat 3D Version 8, design engineering, technical publishing and creative professionals in manufacturing industries such as automotive, aerospace and heavy machinery, as well as the AEC market, can convert virtually any 3D CAD file and other critical project data into a highly compressed PDF document with precise geometry. The PDF file can then be shared with colleagues, suppliers, partners, and customers for more secure visualization, collaboration and CAD data interoperability in an archival-quality format.

Once 3D models are in PDF, Acrobat 3D Version 8 users can enable extended teams to participate in an efficient document review process leveraging the free, ubiquitous Adobe Reader® software. Adobe Reader users can view detailed product structure and, when enabled by Acrobat 3D Version 8, have the ability to use commenting, measurement and cross-section tools directly on 3D objects in PDF files (1).

“It’s not often the manufacturing industry experiences a genuine change in its work processes,” said Gisela Wilson, director of IDC’s Product, Project and Portfolio Management Solutions service. “Based on the wide reach and acceptance of Adobe Reader, innovations in 3D PDF, and its CAD-neutral approach, Adobe has the potential to help change key collaboration processes in extended manufacturing enterprises with the latest version of Acrobat 3D.”

Acrobat 3D Version 8 will deliver enhanced capabilities for producing compressed PDF documents with precise geometry from large, complex CAD assemblies. The product supports conversion to 3D PDF from over 40 formats, including those for Autodesk Inventor, Dassault Systemes CATIA, PTC Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks, and UGS NX and I-deas. The latest version also will enable users to distribute product manufacturing information—used to convey geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, annotations, and dimensions directly on a 3D model—in PDF. In addition, Acrobat 3D Version 8 users will have the option of exporting precise manufacturing CAD data from PDF into neutral file formats such as STEP, IGES and Parasolid for downstream processes such as machining operations and tool and mold design.

Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash® Player, the company’s cross-platform client technologies, are installed on over 700 million connected PCs and devices worldwide.

    Pricing and Availability

The free, fully functional beta version of Acrobat 3D Version 8 is immediately available in English, French and German language versions at labs.adobe.com/technologies/acrobat3d_version8/ . The preview is available for Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4, Windows XP Professional, Home or Tablet PC Editions with Service Pack 2, and Windows Vista™ Ultimate, Enterprise, Business, Home Premium, or Home Basic Editions. The beta version will cease operating on June 15, 2007. Feedback can be submitted and discussed on the Adobe Labs forum. Technical support is not available during the preview period.

Acrobat 3D Version 8 is expected to ship in spring 2007. The product is expected to be available for an estimated street price of US$995 (2). Registered users who purchase Acrobat 3D from Sept. 18, 2006 until the ship of Acrobat 3D Version 8 will be eligible to receive a free upgrade to Acrobat 3D Version 8 (3).
